Lot 2263
INDIA, Medieval. Chapa Dynasty. Dharanivaraha, circa 10th century. Damma (Bronze, 11 mm, 0.94 g). Recumbent bull to right. Rev. SRI DHARANIVARAHA ('Lord Sri Dharanivaraha' in Nagari). Apparently unpublished and of great interest. Very fine.

From a collection of coins from Central Asia.

Dharanivaraha was a powerful Chapa ruler who controlled large parts of Kathiawar peninsula in the early 10th century. His capital was Vardhamanapura (modern day Vadhvan in Saurashtra), but he was apparently defeated by the Chalukya ruler Avani Varman II in circa 916.
